Pluvialis apricaria
Size: 28 cm (11in)
Medium-sized wader with short, straight bill and rounded
head.
Distinguished in all seasons by rich gold and black
spotted plumage on back and wings, white underwing, and
dark tail; no wing bar.
In winter underside and face whitish,
mottled gold-brown. Sexes similar.
Juvenile plumage more
uniform than adult, paler above and darker below.
Confusion most likely with Grey Plover (protected).
